Meet Shiba Prasad Das, a 23-year-old artisan entrepreneur and the creative force behind the loom. Shiba, whose journey is intricately woven with threads of passion and tradition, goes by @spdhandlooms.

His story begins at the age of 13 when he embarked on a journey into the world of weaving, learning the art form from his father—a seasoned jacquard weaver. Shiba's first creation was a humble dupatta, marking the inception of his remarkable craftsmanship. What started as an apprentice's endeavour blossomed into a full-time commitment to the art of weaving in 2016.

In 2019, Shiba joined Antaran, a pivotal moment that transformed his perspective on handloom. With unwavering dedication and a vision for vibrant possibilities, he envisions a radiant future in every intricate weave. Shiba places immense trust in the handloom process, passionately exploring new colour combinations to elevate his craft.

Shiba aspires to achieve milestones driven by his individual efforts. Despite his long-standing desire to enter the business, he grappled with defining the unique selling proposition (USP) of his creations.

The Antaran program proved to be a catalyst for change, igniting Shiba's interest in the captivating realm of colour mixing.

Today, Shiba is not just a weaver; he is an experimenter with a palette of dyes, a maestro of colour matching, and a virtuoso of unique combinations. This newfound expertise has opened doors to a diverse clientele, expanding his list of buyers and establishing his niche in the weaving community.

Introducing the Venkatagiri Heritage:

Venkatagiri, with a cotton weaving tradition predating the British era in India, weaves tales of craftsmanship embedded in time. The roots of this heritage go back to the medieval era when the Velugoti dynasty welcomed weaving communities from diverse corners of erstwhile Madras, birthing the rich tapestry of Venkatagiri textiles.

Flourishing under the nurturing wing of the kings, Venkatagiri became a sanctuary for skilled artisans. The weaving communities brought from different regions converged, shaping Venkatagiri into a prominent center for fine cotton weaving in the southern realms.

The textiles set themselves apart with an ethereal air-like finish and the locally celebrated solid gold lace, affectionately known as the 'khaddi.' Textile connoisseurs highlight the unique combination of moist weather and proximity to the sea, empowering artisans to weave cotton as fine as 200s on their looms.

Evolving over time, the Venkatagiri textile embraced intricate 'adai' and jamdani buttas, elevating its allure with artistic embellishments. Borders became figurative masterpieces, enhanced by the meticulous touch of a dobby attachment, narrating stories of artistic finesse.

The textiles not only withstand the test of time but also weave stories of resilience and evolution. Passed down through generations, each piece carries the legacy of craftsmanship, a testament to the enduring spirit of the artisans who have woven dreams into every thread.

We are thrilled to share how KOSHA @kosha.handmade is revolutionizing the textile and craft sector, addressing the critical issue of trust deficit. Their innovative solution involves placing a QR code on a label/tag on handwoven products, allowing users to scan it for an immersive AR experience. This technology ensures the authenticity of every artisan masterpiece, offering transparency like never before.

In a recent development, three members from the dynamic KOSHA @kosha.handmade Team visited the Maniabandha handloom cluster in Odisha on December 7, 2023. Their mission was to introduce Artisan Entrepreneurs to a groundbreaking device designed to authenticate handloom products, setting them apart from their cheaper power loom counterparts. The visit included a live demonstration, where the device was seamlessly installed onto one of the looms. Additionally, a corresponding app was introduced, allowing real-time monitoring of the entire process and progress of the products.

This momentous occasion not only marks a significant step forward for Antaran and Kosha but also showcases our commitment to empowering handloom weavers and ensuring the integrity of their craft. We are immensely proud of these developments, and we look forward to continuing our journey of innovation and positive impact in the lives of artisans.

In the heart of Venkatagiri, a tradition comes to life every Vinayaka Chaturthi, a celebration that goes beyond the ordinary. The looms, essential instruments in the art of weaving, undergo a meticulous process that transcends craftsmanship into a sacred ritual.

As the auspicious day arrives, the looms are treated with reverence. Each part, from the loom beam to the frame, reed, and shuttle, is carefully cleaned, setting the stage for a unique ceremony. Pooja, a sacred ritual, is performed, and the looms become canvases for artistry with turmeric and kumkum markings adorning every inch.

This tradition, however, is not confined to Venkatagiri alone. In various parts of Andhra, a similar reverence is shown, but the timing shifts to the Ayudha Pooja day, just before the grand culmination of Vijayadashmi.

These sacred rituals not only elevate the act of weaving but also embody the living cultures that breathe life into the very essence of our crafts. They remind us that every thread woven carries with it the spirit of tradition, artistry, and devotion, a testament to the richness of our cultural tapestry.

The Mekhela exhibition on November 3, 2023, in Nagaland's heart, Kohima, at the "Made in Nagaland store," celebrated our cultural heritage woven by skilled artisans.

It highlighted impeccable craftsmanship, diversity, and sustainable practices in Loin looms textiles.

The single-day affair showcased artisans from various regions, presenting a kaleidoscope of textiles with unique colours, patterns, and techniques. Visitors had a special opportunity to engage directly with skilled artisans, gaining insights into the laborious process of Loin loom weaving and fostering a profound appreciation for the artistry involved.

Emphasising sustainability, the exhibition dedicated a section to our Naga cotton tree products, locally harvested and inspired by slow fashion principles. This underscores the importance of supporting artisans committed to environmentally conscious practices.

The handloom exhibition was a resounding success, drawing attention to the heritage, artistry, and sustainability of Loin loom textiles. It provided a unique shopping experience, promoting the timeless beauty of handwoven fabrics.
