The outstandingly colored lagoons appear utterly bizarre as if someone had dipped a load of pink dye while the whole world was sleeping. Doesn't it feel like right out of a fairytale full of magic, but it's actually a completely natural phenomenon in natures' purest form.

Life at Las Coloradas: Mexico

Las Coloradas means “the red” in Spanish. It's the name of a tiny Mexican fishing village with an insignificant population of local Mexican tribes who are into the business of Salt for decades. In addition, this protected wetlands area is the home to animals like flamingos, sea turtles, crocodiles, jaguars, and all kinds of seabirds.

Why is The Water Pink?

While it may appear as an outcome of black magic, the reason for the pink coloration is quite ordinary.

This vibrant bubblegum pink color is caused by the presence of the red-colored algae in the water, such as plankton and brine shrimp, which thrive in salty conditions.

Flamingo Wonderland

At Las Coloradas you can easily spot Flamingos without having to search for too long, which makes this place an ultimate flamingo paradise and a perfect hubspot for all the bird watchers.

At Las Coloradas they have found a perfect habitat with enough food for big colonies.

You might be wondering why these flamingos have pink feathers: It’s because they feed on those red shrimps and plankton.

Things To Do Around:

There is nothing special to do rather than playing with salts, swimming and bird watching.

However, there is no restriction to kill your camera clicking loads of pictures.

What You Should Consider

 FAQ's

Q. Can you safely swim in the lake?
A. The answer is….kind of. The lake has never been shown to produce any adverse effects on people. The pink water is extremely salty, so it may well sting a bit, particularly when you have cuts. Also, the lakes are solely about eight inches deep, so maybe don’t try to do a cannonball.
